The mountain of St. Patrick rises 2,513 feet near the sea in County Mayo. In the year 441, St. Patrick spent the forty days of Lent on Croagh Patrick. Each year, on the last Sunday of July, tens of thousands of pilgrims make their way to the summit. Many navigate the clearly defined rough shale path in their bare feet.
