Overview:
We begin our pilgrimage in Copenhagen where we'll explore some of Denmark's most unique architectural treasures. A transfer across the border at Malmo takes us along the Southern coast of
Sweden winding through the heartland
and into Stockholm. An over-night ferry takes us to Helsinki

Participants fly to Copenhagen
May 21, 2011:
Partipants arrive Copenhagen in the morning.
We look jet lag in the eye and explore the amazing architecture of the “Mountain Dwellings” complex in Orestad City and the Bagsvard Church. We continue with a city tour which includes the Little Mermaid, Amelienborg Castle, and Grundtvig’s Kirke. (the “yellow brick” church.)

Known as the largest public Evangelical Lutheran church in Scandinavia, Grundtvig's Church (Grundtvigskirken in Danish) was built as a national monument for N.F.S. Grundtvig (1783-1872), a Danish philosopher and social reformer. Building commenced in 1921, but the building wasn't completed until 1940. Its design is a combination between a cathedral and the style of old Danish country houses.

Sunday, May 22, 2011:
After a welcome night’s sleep, we drive to the innovative community experiment at the Fredensborg Housing and Kingo Housing estates. After lunch, we drive to Malmö in Sweden. Our explorations there include the City Library, turning torso tower and the modern museum.

Monday, May 23 – Söderåkra
Drive north to Sölvesborg to see the Lister County Courthouse. On to Karlshamn to make a pilgrimage to the emigrant’s statue to remember those who left homeland and family in search of a new life. Travel on to Karlskrona to visit the Holy Trinity Church, a pantheon-style church built in 1750.

Tuesday, May 24 – Öland, Kalmar, Kosta Boda, Orrefors, Eksjö
Today we begin the day at Kalmar Castle, dating back to the 12th century. Our visit includes the Kalmar Museum of Art (Tham & Videgård Hansson, architects). A beautiful drive takes us through the province of Småland where we’ll enjoy a vist to one of Sweden’s emblamatic glass factories, Kosta Boda. On to Klasatorpet, the folk village, where the Emigrants movie was filmed. We continue on to the old-town of Eksjö to see the oldest wooden city still inhabited.

Wednesday, May 25 – Eksjö, Habo, Gränna, Rökstenen, Vadstena
After breakfast we leave Eksjö for Habo where we will see Sweden´s oldest all wooden church. The interior of the church was painted between 1741-1743 by two artists from nearby Jönköping. We will travel north on the shores of Lake Vättern to Gränna, the home of the “polkagris” (peppermint candy). A pilgrimage to Ödeshög will reveal a Viking Age rune stone (Rökstenen). Arrival at Vadstena in the early afternoon. We will have the opportunity to explore the Vadstena Abbey and Monastery, founded in 1346 by Saint Bridget.

Thursday, May 26 – Vadstena, Bergs Slussar, Järna, Stockholm
We will make a brief stop to see the boats go through the locks of the Göta Canal, built in 1832, at Bergs Slussar. Continuing north on E-4 we will stop at the Seminary in Järna. (Erik Asmussen, architect). Lunch at the School. Early afternoon arrival in Stockholm – City tour to include City Hall, Wasa Museum, Millesgården.
Dinner and evening on your own in Stockholm.

Friday, May 27 – Stockhom/Helsinki
Visit the School of Architecture meeting with Swedish architects. Other sites in Stockholm include the Modern Museum, Church of St. Mark, Woodland Chapel or Stockholm Library. Leaving at 5 pm, we’ll enjoy a beautiful evening voyage through the archipelago and savor a classic Scandinavian Smörgåsbord dinner before retiring for the night on an overnight ferry to Helsinki.

Saturday, May 28 and Monday, May 29 – Helsinki
Two days in Helsinki will give us time to explore many sites in and around the city including the Temppelinaukio Rock Church and to participate in The St. Thomas Mass, an emerging-style worship experience at Mikael Agricola Church in Helsinki.
